Lessons From My Grandmother | The Power of Eating Well & Exercise

Check out the picture I took.  There I am in the midst of my morning routine of reading and blogging at my desktop.  In the background you can see my Mac, which is now only good for powering up my iPhone since the BSOD hit me and hit me hard!  More on that later.

I woke up this morning in sort of a reflective mode as I could hear my grandmother's voice singing "Well it's another day-that the Lord-has kept me!" I get like this sometimes when I think about her.  It's been years since she passed away.  Strangely though, the things she taught are more clear now than they ever were when she was here with me.

My grandmother was actually my first example of someone who changed their lifestyle in order to be healthy and to live well.  I can remember at dinner, there were separate pots and pans on the stove (yes, I grew up in my grandmother's house).  There may have been fried chicken with pork & beans over rice for us.  For her it was a baked potato, spinach and broiled chicken.

I never paid much attention to this, but once I got older and asked, I remember my mom telling me that my grandmother had a health scare in her mid 50's.  Her physician told her that if she wanted to live much longer, she needed to change the way she was eating and begin exercising.  I was told that it was literally overnight that she changed things.  I had to look at older pictures to see when she weighed much more than she did for the better part of my life.  I do remember being very young and being fascinated by the skin that was hanging from her arms :^).  I would play with her arms and called them watermelons because the way the skin hung when she had her arms up was shaped like a slice of watermelon! I guess that didn't hurt her motivation to lose weight and live better.  I was very young though, maybe 3 or 4, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I mention that this morning because my grandmother lived to be 87 years old.  I would bet money that she bought an extra 25-30 years of life simply by changing the way she ate and walking more.  She didn't have a gym membership or any fancy weights sitting around the house.  There were no Nintendo Wii Sports or PX 90's or ever a Billy Blanks Tape to use.  She would walk to the bus stop to travel across town and walk around to get to various destinations.  That my friends is exercise.  My grandmother found a way to incorporate the things she did anyway and turn them into opportunities to improve her health.  Therefore I say to you....as you view my blog (http:///www.lourileylive.com) and you read my post, listen to my podcasts and hopefully become inspired, you don't lose enthusiasm just because you don't have the fancy things that others have in order to exercise.  Walking still counts and as I hear from some exercise professionals, it still ranks as the best total body activity.  I hope this helps!
